Fat'hi works in the railway returns to his village to see his wife after twenty years since she left him. . The villagers all express their disapproval to his return and the only ones helping him are a clergyman and a man who works as a telecommunication technician in the village. The story is that Fat'hi, being an old man now, has decided to see his wife before death to ask for forgiveness. Fat'hi has learned through religious statements, that if 40 pious people declare somebody's uprightness and vouch for him, the vouched person will experience salvation. This religious belief urges him to start on his journey to collect and find those forty men and ask them to sing his burial shroud saying he was a pious man. Then, he sets off to the far and remote hilltop where his wife dwells and is accompanied by the clergyman, the technician and the village nurse. On the way, they are hampered by heavy snow and extremely cold weather. Bad weather conditions leave Fat'hi alone on his journey and the rest go back. Sadly, when he finally gets there, he is unable to finish his journey. He is frozen to death. The day after his death, the last and fortieth piety signature is ready for him.
